Powerstar is expanding its product range in South Africa with the new Powerstar FT Series (comprising FT3, FT5 and FT8 models) of medium and heavy-duty distribution trucks.
The new range of trucks was launched to the media and customers this week at the company’s Pietermaritzburg assembly plant.
“We are new in the distribution segment of the market. We’ve spent five years planning this move. The first batch of FT3 and FT5 vehicles has been delivered to our dealers already. And as promised, these vehicles all come to the South African market with the correct specification,” explains Bob Wang, CEO at Everstar Industries.
“The market needs to learn to trust these trucks and there is great comfort in knowing that the FT Series comes with Powerstar’s full backing and support. We will grow sales exponentially because of the way we do business and the way our business model works,” he states.
FT’s are all fitted with Cummins engines, while the transmissions are all manual ZF’s (until the range is bolstered later on with the arrival of AMT’s). “We have chosen high-end components and full air brakes for these trucks. This means efficient braking with less brake fade.”
All FT’s come standard with air-conditioning, power steering and cruise control. In addition, the braking systems are all from Wabco. “We all know that with better braking you get better fuel consumption.
“We’ve tried various configurations in terms of cab, platform and engines. On the FT8, we had three engine options available to us but we went for the medium powered version as it is competitive and cost efficient in terms of the initial purchase price and its subsequent maintenance costs.”
All FT models come with a two-year unlimited warranty. The engines are rated with 115kw of power and 500nm of torque at 1 200rpm. They all have exhaust brakes, front discs, large 200-litre fuel tanks and ZF Ecolite 6-speed synchromesh gearboxes.

The Powerstar FT Series is PTO compatible although this feature is not provided as standard. In the case of special applications where PTO is required, it is available and can be fitted at any of the brand’s 33 dealers nationwide.
“We have chosen trucks that are the right weight to get the correct payloads. Every conceivable configuration is available, be it dropside, mini tippers, vans, tautliners, insulated and refrigerated. We have approved certain body builders as our preferred quality suppliers.”
Wang says the company has already received great interest in the range from truck rental companies. “We are targeting 40 units per month,” he concludes.
